- To a vigorously stirred, cold (0°C) solution of morpholine (680g, 7.8 mol) in 1500 ml of hexane is added a solution of titanium(iv) chloride (146 ml, 1.33 mol) in 300 ml of hexane.
- After the addition is complete diisobutyl ketone (142.2g, 1.0 mol) is added in one portion.
- The cooling bath is removed and the reaction allowed to proceed under reflux for 2 hours.
- After cooling, the mixture is filtered through a sintered glass filter and the solvent removed under reduced pressure, giving a yellow oil which is distilled under reduced pressure. The yield of enamine is 171.4g (87.7%), b.p. 106-108 °C/10mmHg (1).
Notes to keep in mind:
1. This method has been successfully applied to a very large range of straight and branched chain aliphatic ketones.
